The Raducanu backlash: why the world was so quick to criticise a teenage icon

If you were to peruse the coverage of the Emma Raducanu story over the last year, you could be forgiven for suspecting the US Open champion had committed a crime. The apparent joy too many observers have taken in the failings of a 19-year-old, who remains one of the greatest assets to tennis for the next decade, has been nothing short of mystifying.
A Steep Climb and an Inevitable Stumble
Becoming an overnight superstar was never going to be easy. In early 2021, Raducanu was playing junior tournaments in front of a handful of spectators. By the end of that year, she was being promoted as the "saviour" of women’s tennis.
That transition is a vertical climb, and a stumble or two was always likely. Those setbacks duly arrived as Raducanu found her feet on the WTA Tour, losing more matches than she won during her debut season. Critics were quick to pounce, citing:
High-profile sponsorship deals.
A revolving door of coaching staff.
The influence of her parents.
They blamed everything except the simple reality: a young player needs time to find her feet on a senior tour she had never played on before.
The Expert View: Patience Over Pressure
Former British No. 1 Tim Henman, who witnessed her New York miracle firsthand, remains one of her most vocal supporters. Speaking at a Play Your Way To Wimbledon event, Henman urged for a reality check:
"What she achieved coming through qualifying to win a Grand Slam was one of the most incredible things I’d ever seen in tennis. It hasn’t been straightforward and she’s had plenty of adversity, but I’ve been so impressed with her attitude.
She sometimes gets knocked down, but she dusts herself off and gets straight back up. There is no question about her ability and mental fortitude. The one area where she needs time—and we have to be patient—is the physicality and understanding what Tour life is all about."
The "Click-Bait" Phenomenon
Website editors quickly discovered that Raducanu was a sporting story that reached far beyond the "tennis bubble." The public’s obsession with what she wore and what she earned delivered the clicks the media craved.
However, this commercial goldmine created a double-edged sword. While the industry hoped she would keep winning to fuel the hype, the narrative of a "falling star" proved just as lucrative for engagement.
The Tide is Turning
As Raducanu prepares to start the defence of her US Open crown, there are signs that her form and confidence are returning just in time.
Recent wins against legends like Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka at the Cincinnati Masters (though perhaps aided by opponents past their peak) showed that the "strut" is back in Raducanu’s stride. As she returns to Flushing Meadows, she does so with the hope of silencing those who have been waiting for her to fail.
